Implant Complication

As dentists become more proficient and experienced at implantology, more complex situations can arise. From simple prosthetic issues such as loose fixation screws, to more complex issues of fractured implants, screws, and or abutments, it is good to have a working knowledge of how to solve these issues. Additionally, biologic problems such as peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis maybe be able to be managed successfully. Grafting around failing implants can be very helpful in saving fixtures. Tackling implant complications can be frustrating but it also can create opportunity for a doctor to become a better implantologist. Many of these incidents may not happen that frequently but if you have an idea of what steps to take to correct the problem, it can make the solution easier. Additionally, patients will feel you are an expert in being able to handle their problem.  Being in a dedicated implant practice for over 20 years has afforded me many opportunities to see and remedy problems. I hope my knowledge and stories can help my colleagues feel more comfortable in trying to solve complications. Any doctor who places implants, beginner or intermediate, will become more aware of solutions, tools, tricks, and tips to not be so intimidated if something goes sideways.
